　　Spanish and Portuguese stock markets ended markedly lower Thursday as Greece's sovereign debt concerns triggered doubts about the fiscal sustainability of the two Iberian countries. Markets elsewhere in Europe and in the Americas also tumbled as the worries spread out. Key indexes in Asia were lower.

　　Other European markets were hurt by nervousness about the debt problems of Greece, Spain and Portugal. The pan-European Dow Jones Stoxx 600 index started off in the green but couldn't hold on to early gains. Losses accelerated sharply in the afternoon and the index lost 2.7% to 242.70.

　　In LONDON, the FTSE 100 index fell 2.2% to 5139.31. Banks were hurt as the Bank of England halted its asset-buying program. Lloyds Banking Group lost 6.8%, Barclays slid 7.8% and Royal Bank of Scotland Group declined 5.8%. Miners also fell as commodities were weak, with Eurasian Natural Resources down 7.1% and Xstrata off 6%.
